This is my Tabaxi Barbarian "Star" ddb.ac/characters/11074936/SBojLa
I'm planning my next level and I've talked to the DM about me going rogue. We have a Goliath Berserker Barbarian in the group already so I'm thinking to take advantage of my Tabaxi race to move towards a rogue. Now I'm having a conundrum. My DM has said I can become either a Swashbuckler or a Scout and I'm debating which route to play. I have also talked to my DM and he has agreed to let me use my claws as Finesse weapons and I will be able to use them for sneak attack if I want.
I'm leaning towards Scout because our party doesn't really have a scouting type character, no ranger or rogue so I want to fill that niche. But I know Swashbuckler is the best melee rogue.
Or do you think I would be better off staying as barbarian?
the more specific thing needed to know to answer your question is what about rogue is drawing you to multiclass to it? Are there specific mechanics you want, or is there a feeling/fantasy part of incorporating it in.
if its about finding traps and disarming them, id say you probably could use a feat instead of going into multiclass. (prodigy if he lets you be flexible, you will want to raise your int as well so you could actually have a good chance of finding them)
if its about movement, then i would say go with scout. as DxJxC mentioned your getting one aspect already of the class with out multiclassing due to your selection of eagle but multiclassing into rogue from barb with any choice would make you chose between your cunning action and your rage move.
i think that if your go swashbuckler your next api needs to be invested in charisma, which kind of limits your damage output, saddly swashbuckler I feel is a subclass that more often then not you want to plan for from the beginning and isnt something to tip your toe into.
Last thought/question is why don't you have the ability to go thief? that will give you the ability to run along walls and the extra utility of using items as a bonus action, which is really pretty op once you look at all the items that you can use and how to go about using them.
I want to multi-class into rogue because I think it will be of the biggest benefit for our group. But also RPwise it fits the way I want move towards with my character.
The other reason I am thinking about rogue is because we don't have any lockpickers, trap disarmers etc so the rogue part of that will take care of that for us.
The reason I only have the Swashbuckler or Scout subclass is the setting for the game. We are mostly in the wilderness and when we aren't we are in a smaller town so not really any thief trainers but there are some pirates around for the swashbuckling training.
Thanks

Would love for some feedback.
You can still be a scout role even without the scout subclass. In terms of combat, the swashbuckler is probably the better choice.
It should be noted that you totem spirit is completely redundant once you get cunning action though.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies.
