I'm playing a homebrewed Rug of Smothering character who is an Arcane Trickster Rogue currently at Level 5. DM is very accommodating. I play predominantly melee and a few ranged spells as an aggressive role (we have lots of utility/support in the party). I would like to multi-class into Wizard at level 6. I've looked up a lot of similar posts and everyone advises against it, or to plan it out and do it sooner if you are going to do this. The main reason why I want to do this is so that I can learn spells from other wizards, npcs and the like in the campaign (lots of those opportunities but I can't do it cause "i'm just a trickster, not a wizard"), more spell slots, higher level spells sooner, and more dedicated casting potential while still being efficient in melee with sneak attack, etc. It really fits the character and would be very plausible to pick up a few levels in wizard the way the story is at currently.
Main weapons are 2 rapiers (dual wielder feat, works really well with the way the DM handles it)
Any tips based on how I should do it, how many levels to take, what school to go for? I'm thinking War Magic might work well with this? Not dead set on any school at all though. Sorry for my incredibly messy and random post.
If you start going Wizard at level 6, you will be learning 3rd level spells at level 10. Probably not helpful enough in the higher spells sooner category.
Have you considered the magic initiate or ritual caster feat?
Also, if you are dual wielding all the time, you may want warcaster feat as well.
Thanks for the input, the DM doesn't seem to be very harsh or even consistent on the whole "you can't dual-wield while casting a spell cause you need to hold the component" thing, so I'm not sure warcaster may be necessary. Magic Initiate sounds very good and I considered it as my first one. Would you recommend I take it as my next Ability Score Improvement instead of making my dex for 22 or making my INT 19? also, do you just entirely recommend not multi-classing? I think just being able to learn more spells in general, having more spell-slots and just opening up more of these opportunities are great, but I don't want to mess it up.
I would either do no levels if wizard, 18 in rogue and 2 in wizard, or 13 rogue and 7 wizard. Various features at each level for max optimization. (I’m a min maxer when I want to be).
2 in wizard gives you slightly faster spell progression but the ability to copy spells, not only have to use illusion or enchant spells + a wizard school.
7 in wizard gives 4th level spells while retaining good sneak attack, most rogue features, your 2nd to last subclass feature, while the ability to upcast spells to 6th level. I could go more in depth if you’d like.
Thanks, I think I want to go for the 7 in wizard. I already have 5 in rogue as i've said, what class should I pick each level up? Or rather, what levels do I pick wizard at...

Stats: STR = 9, DEX= 18 + 2 (with items), CON=15, INT=15+2 9 (with items) WIS=13, CHA=13.
