HI, im new to D&D and have created my first character, an air genasi rouge, now im just wondering what weapons and abilities to have, if you have any idea or advice you can give me on future Rouge builds ill be glad to hear it (Its a Dexterity build)
Need to decide if you favor melee or range. Rapier, short sword, scimtar etc finess weapons or long bow, hand crozzbow etc. I like range for my thief. But its really a personal choice plus helps to get idea of what teammates are doing. I chose scout as my thief.i like the extra skills and expertise. Also your background can help fill in skill gaps as well. Its really a wide open choice for you to play with.
What kind of rogue do you want to play? Air genasi is good for scout and thief, though can do ok as an assassin. Arcane trickster is always fun to play.

Yes, the type of Rogue subclass can greatly influence the primary weapon choice.
The Swashbuckler is intended to be melee; rapier and buckler shield for example. While an assassin might want to stick with range, long bow and Sharpshooter feat for example, to increase their chance to land their surprise sneak attack. And the Scout rogue may want the hand crossbow with the Crossbow Expert feat or Dual Wield so they can mix it up moving in and out attacking with range or melee as they dance around the battlefield.

Well first off, did you choose Starting Equipment or Starting Gold? If you're new to the game, definitely go with Starting Equipment, and it'll guide your choices.
As for your abilities, Rogues don't really get "choices", except for which subclass. Of course, if you go Arcane Trickster you'll be picking spells. All of the subclasses have their uses, just read them over and see which one tickles your fancy.
There is one choice you get to make right up front. What is your background? A rogue in my party chose Entertainer because he wanted to pass himself off as a Bard whenever he was around civilization. Well I can understand the motivation. He hopes to rob some people and stores before folks start suspecting he might be a thief. As an Entertainer you get proficiency with instruments and proficiency with acrobatics and performance. I believe you get proficiency with a disguise kit, which any rogue should like. So read through the backgrounds and see if there is something there you really like.
