https://www.dndbeyond.com/profile/Bernie/characters/32477258 Kind of redundant to really bring it up now, but we rolled stats for a new Theros game and I got my usual lot when rolling... A couple 7s, and everything else pretty ok. I chose Smuggler BG to sorta fill in some of my dumb stat important skills... Got Athletics and Perception to 0 rather than negatives. Looking at the numbers I figured a satyr rogue / Arcane Trickster would be pretty suitable cuz ya know high dex / high int / decent Con makes for fun skill and spell use.
What ya'll think? I can change my archtype per my DM's discretion, cuz we just rolled over 3rd level. I just feel this is pretty thematically fitting.
PLUS / what's some fun spells? Just go the usual illusion route?
There is no "best" choice for rogue. They're all pretty good as archetypes.
It's entirely up to how you want to play.
Want to play as a tricky magic rogue? There's arcane trickster.
Want to play a devious cunning rogue that's brains behind the group? Mastermind
Want to play as a skirmisher who hits and runs in melee? Swashbuckler
Want to play as a skirmisher who hits and runs at range? Scout
Want to play as the sherlock of the group? Inquisitive is a good theme for you.
My personal opinion is that wisdom should never be a dump stat, and a rogue with a low perception score isn't really a rogue. It's a super versatile class when it comes to skills and perception/investigation plus double proficiencies make it the king of the exploration pillar of the game. Acrobats never needs double proficiency unless your DM grapples you all day every day and you're having problems with escaping.
Also ranged attack spells with arcane trickster don't work with sneak attack. Magic missile is not an effective use of your very limited spell slots. Find familiar, fog cloud and shield are the 3 spells I would recommend from your any-magic-school spell.
Illusion/enchantment spells that are good for low level arcane tricksters: Sleep, disguise self, illusory script, silent image, tasha's hideous laughter are all useful. Color spray is kind of trash.
You have a perception of 0 and no dark vision - stealth 8 is kinda pointless as you will be walking into every trap and unable to see anything after dark. Having a 7 wisdom is a bad idea, at the very least you should swap it with charisma, giving you a 9 charisma and a 10 wisdom - at least you will get a +3 perception from proficiency that way. I would also seriously consider Mage Armour - it will massively improve your AC.
