So I’ve been playing an Inquisive rogue for some time now, a tinker gnome, and for story reasons I’ve been wanting to steer her towards artificer, though I’ve never seen the multiclass in any strat guides before. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to make that viable, between what people think the most compatible subclass would be, and what feats might be most useful for this weird build, how to balance levels, etc. She’s got INT and DEX as her highest scores rn, dumped CHA, currently rogue 9 artificer 1
I've been thinking about doing an Rogue Artificer for a while and there are a lot of pretty good options. I'd recommend the armorer subclass since it probably goes the best with rogue. With it you can gain proficiency with any armor while ignoring strength requirements. From there the infiltrator model can give you an extra 5 feet of movement, advantage on stealth checks, and your sneak attack can be used with it's lightning launcher. Stopping after you get your subclass is probably your best choice since you get to keep your 17th level inquisitive rogue feature. Though dipping 5 or 6 levels into Artificer might be good too. At 5th level you can get 2nd level spells and an extra attack. At 6th level you'd get expertise on tools and more importantly you get the cloak of elven kind infusion which is amazing for rogues even with you infiltrator stealth advantage. You would miss out on a couple sneak attack dice and the slippery mind feature. I don't have any recommendations for Feats, at least none that I would recommend for this build specifically.
My experience is backwards, arti3 battle smith -rogue3 arcane trickster -Battlesmith 5 multi attack- currently turning over whether to chase sneak attack dice or go for higher level spell slots.

Ah, decisions...decisions...
I love my Artificer although I'm a Battlesmith. I really like BoyBlue's ideas above though.
So i have a rogue 4 arcane trickster, artificer 3 battle Smith. This combo is tough because to make the steel defender usefull you have to keep your artificer lvl growing. But the sneak attack dice from AT rouge is also helpful. Any thoughts on how to finish Leveling this guy would help.

As with many topics here, I think this one is going to fall into the 'it depends on your campaign' category. I would have a chat with the DM, let them know you're torn over the decision, and see what they have to say.

The only benefit your SD gets from your Artificer levels is hit points, outside of subclass benefits at levels 9 and 15, and you should have a cantrip that heals your Defender, meaning it enters every fight at full health unless things have gone strange. You should figure out how you intend to use your Defender and plan accordingly - if you don't plan on using your other Artificer benefits, the SD is a poor reason to commit to more Artificer levels.
As a fun lil update- I ended up going Armorer, for the stealth upgrades and movement speed- so far im only level 3 but I think im gonna keep dipping artificer, maybe going up to lvl 12 in rogue for sneak attack and reliable talent. will update with any play experiences
I’m currently playing a lvl 4 Armorer (infiltrator) Artificer/lvl 2 Rogue and I absolutely love it. I think I will do one more level in rogue and go scout for the mobility and then stick with artificer after that. She’s so versatile, and being in a group that doesn’t have a tank, I can switch to guardian model after a short or long rest if I know we will need one. Also, being able to infuse my group mates weapons to make them magical early game is very useful.
