I created a fallen aasimar named Malorath and made him a shadow sorcerer. i figured the two would work well together playing on a dark theme. I was wondering if you guys had any ideas for a good backstory. I haven't had much luck tying in why he would turn away from his divine heritage to embrace the darkness.
This is a fairly easy fix. Make his divine connection be to the Raven Queen, making his "fall" not be a result of turning away from his divine heritage but instead embracing it. And with Shadow Magic already stemming from the Shadowfell, the fit is even more perfect since it's her domain.
Beyond that, I'd talk to your DM about keeping your angelic guide since the character isn't fallen in the traditional sense of the aasimar fluff. As well as reflavoring the skeletal wings into that of dark raven-like feathers. And from an RP standpoint, you will definitely want to run with the duality of your character. From how it feels to exist between life (radiant) and death (necrotic), as well the difficulty in striking a balance between aiding those in need (healing hands) and punishing those beyond redemption (necrotic shroud). All while adhering to the fervent beliefs and guidance of the Raven Queen, which may or may not conflict with your own feelings on a particular matter. Ultimately leading to your "rise" if your character believes the Raven Queens methods are too harsh or unforgiving, depending on how your DM plays the Raven Queen and her guidance.
If familiar with comics, Sinestro is a good example of how to play a fallen aasimar. As he basically goes from a protector aasimar to a scourge aasimar over his career as a green lantern until his eventual fall when he becomes a yellow lantern.
I had kicked a few ideas around but haven't really given the idea of embracing his heritage a chance. thanks for the feedback, i believe this will tie in nicely with the character and campaign setting we play. This could also let me shy away from playing a character that is inherently evil and let me focus on a more neutral alignment following the raven queens ideals. This could also create an interesting dynamic with some of the other characters in my party. thanks for the idea, this really helps solve the problems i was facing in character design and background. most of the people in my party play a wide scale of alignments, from our tiamat worshipping paladin to our goofy unintelligent archer. This creates a good in-between to keep the peace and balance the party a little more.
Perhaps he's jaded from too many people piling too many expectations on him.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
