Hi. I have a question about the 6th level feature Psionic Sorcery.
The feature says "Beginning at 6th level, when you cast any spell of 1st level or higher from your Psionic Spells feature, you can cast it by expending a spell slot as normal or by spending a number of sorcery points equal to the spell's level."
Does this include upcasting of your spells from your psionic spells list?
For example: summon aberration is on the psionic spells list. Can i use 6 sorcery points to cast that spell at 6th level and not use a spell slot? Or 8 sorcery points to cast it at 8th level? Or am i limited to only being able to cast it at 4th level using Psionic Sorcery?
When related to casting a spell, it is reasonable to conclude the "spell's level" equates to the "spell slot" that would be used to. This is supported by the text in Summon Aberration "Use the spell slot’s level for the spell’s level in the stat block."
This is more of a DM discussion and if they will allow upcasting with this feature (I believe it should be allowed based on how it is written); and your proposed cost for the slot appears to be valid.

This opens some some interesting options. The aberrant sorcerer could burn 2 third level spell slots to get 6 sorcery points and use those points to cast a 6th level summon abberation without using a spell slot. This could be done to sacrifice any combination of lower level spell slots to cast higher level versions of psionic spells. Getting extra castings of any 5th level spell or higher is quite strong even if its a restricted spell list. I may have underrated this feature.
Even without upcasting you can do that up to its 5th level spells. So, yeah its a great feature. I used it a lot the one time I played a one. Given where the campaign ended I didn't really use it for 6t level spells. In 2024 where metamagic is a bit better I may use it less if i play one again but in 2014 rules I thought metamagic was kind of lame so I used all my metamagic points for more spells.

No. Up casting requires you to cast the spell by using a spell slot of higher level. You are using sorcery points to cast the spell by spending points equal to the spells level. You and only use sorcery points to cast the spell at its original level. I’m pretty sure this was discussed in an old 5e video or sage advice. Now it is 2024 5eR, but if you read the spells discription of casting at higher levels and the wording of the feature they do not align for you to upcast using sorcery point.
^ What they said. If you are not using a spell slot, you can only cast the spell at the minimum level required to do so - you can't upcast it unless you use a spell slot of the upcast level.

While it's not clearly defined in the text, I would say that you can, and would expect most GMs to agree.
