Tried a sorlock build but the group didn't hold. But I found a new game. We are starting at level 5, Im considering trying a sorlock again, Sor3/War2, Red draconic bloodline, or sorcerer with arcane initiate in warlock for EB and once a day hex. My ability rolls are good, stats with racial abilities are: 8, 16, 18, 15, 10, 20. So really the ABSI at 4 isn't a big deal. So which would make the better character, Sorlock or Sorcerer with arcane initiate in warlock?
I'd go for the multi-class personally, so that way I can get some of the battlefield control effects for EB. Even though the extra 6th and 7th level slots are nice, they are one time use per rest, which is irritating. I prefer permanent effects on my characters, like Repelling Blast or Devil's Sight, as I can rely on them more often.
I tend to gear my magic using characters to social or utility use more than blasting and rely on cantrips for hitting power with a few exceptions like fireball. I just have doubts about the usefulness of firebolt longterm even if I took elemental adept. Thats why i love the idea of sorlocks, EB + AB is ideal for my spell casting kind of play for offensive spells. But I also hate delaying the level progression in sorcerer. If I don't take 2 levels in warlock then the MC isnt worth it which brings me back to will EB without AB be worth taking the arcane initiate feat instead of elemental adept at level 4 or bite the bullet and go sorlock and dump the 2 levels there and get the best cantrip and add on hands down at the cost of upper level spell delay. Hence the need for advice.
If you go the multiclass route you’re giving up starting with 3rd level spells. My opinion is that unless the goal of the campaign is to fight creatures that are immune to fire like some fiends, Firebolt with Elemental Adept plus Toll the Dead is all you need long term for damage dealing cantrips. One that requires a hit roll and one that requires a saving throw.
Hypnotic Pattern and Slow are just incredible battlefield control spells since you don’t focus on blasting. Not to mention twinned Haste on 2 of your allies!
I prefer the multiclass, because you can use the pact slots to get sorcery points back on short rest. Because of that, I recommend 3 levels warlock for level 2 slots and pact boon.
What warlock patron are you using? Usually, hexblade is the go to for armor/shield, weapons, and single ability dependence. But if you are draconic bloodline, you don't really need armor as much. Celestial is one of my favorites for access to healing (plus bonus cantrips).
My DM said if I multiclass he isn’t gonna let me churn pact slots for sorcery points. Which I know kills some of the cool and utility of the MC combo, hence part of my indecision.

Well that's a buzz kill. Still, I don't think it is really worth using a feat to get eldritch blast without agonizing blast.
I would also pick up one other damage type, preferably a cantrip that requires saving throws instead of a to hit roll, because there are some monsters that are immune to fire. You may not use it often, but you will use it.
I would prefer to go pure sorcerer personally. The fact, that your DM won't let you burn warlock spell slots into sorcery points is huge. And while eldritch blast with hex and agonizing blast might be one of the best damage combos in the game you will be slowing your caster progression a lot.
Also as someone above me said there is a roleplay aspect that you entered a pact with some very powerful being and that might bite you in the ass mightily.
Down the road, you might offset fire resistance by taking Elemental Adept feat but there are also many creatures with fire immunity too (elementals, fire dragons, almost all fiends). But the truth is that you cannot have a perfectly balanced character that has tools for everything if you are a sorcerer (unlike wizards). My sorcerer has a range of fire and mind-controlling spells and we met some kind of devil with immunity to charm AND immunity to fire AND flying and I wasn't able to touch him at all with even though I have Shocking grasp as backup damage cantrip.
I went ahead and took pure sorcerer with Elemental Adept and took Chill Touch as a secondary damage cantrip for now and when I hit level 8 I will take Magical Initiate for Warlock to take EB and Toll the Dead as additional damage cantrips. At that point I will have utility and buff/debuff spells and no other damaging spells beyond cantrips. At least that's my plan.

So you think firebolt with elemental adapt and going straight sorcerer would be the best way to go?
Maybe. There are 86 (I counted before they added all the variant monsters) monster that are resistant to fire and most are over CR7.

Yeah I was planning on taking toll the dead or shocking grasp just in case.
Don't forget that depending on the DM, levels of warlock can be an excuse to make your life hell because of the pact.

Well you DM sounds kind of like a ******. That is just part of what this multiclass does.
