Unfortunately, its not on the Sorcerer's spell list. Even if it were, a 4th level spell slot and an action for what is basically a repeating 1st level Hellish rebuke with no upcasting is kind of underwhelming. It makes more sense for Warlocks.
If you go clockwork soul, you can have Armor of Ag. Temp HP plus damage back. At 6th level they get damage mitigation. At 7th level FireShield for more damage back.

You don't get Fire Shield at 7th level. Its not in the additional spell list, and it isn't accessible from Clock Work magic access to the Wizard/Warlock spell lists because it is an evocation spell, and the Clock Work sorcerer only gets access to their abjuration and transmutation spells.
Maybe this was different in the UA before tasha's was released?

It's not underwhelming, It's a repeating Hellish Rebuke that requires no reaction, no concentration, and repeats on every melee attack that hits you when the attacker is within 5ft. And it gives you resistance to either Cold Damage or Fire Damage.

I guess it could work out pretty well. Paradoxically, its best purpose might be dissuading enemies from targeting my sorcerer after that first hit.
But to really get use out of it, I'd have to kind of expect my sorcerer to get wailed on. I'd much rather use that 4th level spell slot on a thunder step to get out of trouble.
We have a beast-hide shifter with the draconic bloodline, toughness feat and he always casts mirror image at the start of combat. He is always frontline and a successful tank!

Thats funny, I've been playing around with a similar concept! Im thinking of going a few levels in Paladin though, if I really want to focus on the melee side of things.
A good build in my opinion is 12 levels as a sorcerer, 2 as a warlock and 5 as a warrior. Start with 3 levels as a sorcerer, continue with 2 as a warlock and finally 5 as a warrior. The rest all as a sorcerer. For the warlock select the hexblade to be able to use the charisma for the attack roll. At the second level, choose devil's sight between invocations and another one of your choice. Darkness, shadowblade and devil's sight. You will hit good and you will also be a good caster.
as deathmvp said, Hexblade warlock since it gives you prof in armor if you want to wear it and you can pretty much wield any weapon you want once you get to level 3 and get pact of the blade.
yeah but it doesn't always fit story wise.....if you are just Min/Maxing sure that is fine.
You don't HAVE to work a patron into the story. Just be a sorcerer with weapons and armor proficiency.
Not at all pleased with WotC for going out of their way to rewrite Booming Blade and Green Flame Blade. It's taken so much potential away from interesting melee caster builds, the Sorcerer more than any other!
What's more, they'veee allowed Wizards (Bladesigner) make Extra Attacks with with cantrips. Doesn't WotC's favouritism for the Wizard class over the Sorcerer know no boundaries!?
How do the changes mess with things? The only issue I could see is with reach weapons or spell sniper.
Blade singers get to use a cantrip and a lack luster melee attack. A melee sorcerer still gets more chances to spam straight up cantrips. Seems fine to me.

Tashas added fire shield to the general sorcerer list (beginning of the sorcerer section.)
Fire Shield, flaming sphere and other spells were added to the sorc list. Check tashas's again.

And stacks with the damage back from Armor of Agathar. And looks super cool.

Ah, I didn't see the optional spell list. I guess its only technically added in then, but Im sure most GM's would allow it.
Yeah, it's technically added in the same sense that the Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul subclasses were technically added.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Yes and no? They are pretty explicit about making a distinction between the class offerings and the optional rules that require DM approval.

I'm going to let my player know about the paladin idea!! That's a great idea and that player loves to smite haha.
Edit: Sorry I deleted the original post, I'm having technical difficulties on this computer!! The deleted comment says the above.

It also removed the ability to use Shadow Blade with Booming Blade or Green Flame Blade.
It also removed the ability to do opportunity attacks with Booming Blade.
Ah, yeah the shadow blade nerf is sad.
But how could you do opportunity attacks with booming blade before? You can still do it with warcaster, right?
