But how could you do opportunity attacks with booming blade before? You can still do it with warcaster, right?
You could do it before with war caster (which nearly every melee caster took), but now that Booming Blade targets yourself instead of targeting the enemy that you're attacking, it doesn't fit the requirements of the war caster feat for opportunity attacks which only lets you use the spell if it's targeting the enemy.
It's to be noted with the whole Warcaster & Booming Blade thing, that a spell with a range of Self (5ft) is actually not defined in the rules of D&D. It's kind of stupid, but the rules for D&D are that:
1. Spells that are only Self, affect only the user.
2. In addition, cone or line spells that originate from you are also Self. For these spells your the Point of Origin rather than the target (due to how cones/lines work you physically cannot be the target).
Booming Blade calls out that the creature you hit is a target who suffers a ton of negative side-effects, so it's very hard to argue that it affects only the user. Unless you want to argue the caster is the one who takes the thunder damage, in which case nobody is going to use that spell. It's also definitely not a cone or a line spell. So it's range is literally undefined in D&D.
We had a massive discussion about it (and other various Booming Blade stuff), and it went nowhere. Basically just ask the DM. Most will probably just lift the whole "cone/line" restriction and have it fall under the second definition of Self spells cause that makes the most sense.

if I edit a message, most of the time it's because of grammar. The rest of the time I'll put "Edit:" at the bottom.
I tried building a divine soul X/ college of sword bard lvl 6 (extra atk and not losing out on spell slots). It seems pretty useful and fun. The base if Shadow blade and dual wielding with a scimitar.
