I'm in the process of building a changeling shadow sorcerer and am looking for a good background. The problem is, none of the Player handbook backgrounds really work with a changeling shadow sorcerer, other than a charlatan or a criminal, and that's really not the flavor I'm looking for in my character. Does anybody have any ideas for optimized backgrounds?
I'm not really sure what your after as almost any of the backgrounds can be made work roleplay/storywise, your changing can literally be anything (including criminal/spy, emphasis on spy). As for optimizing it depends on what you've picked for your race/class(es) so far and what your backstory is, and what you want (Ie. you need Hide?)
E.g. 'Haunted One' might fit well with a backstory (Dark ritual), give you access to some shadow-like languages and two more proficiencies but its hardly optimising and wont be available to you on DnDbeyond unless you own the Strahd source book or home brew it yourself.
In short I know far to little about your flavour/character/request/access to know what might be best to recommend.

You can often make individual or section-specific purchases of the source material in DnDBeyond, wugc as buying a range of backgrounds from Curse of Strahd or a single spell from Xanathar’s. Haunted zone is a good suggestion!
There are various Sorcerer Guides out there to help with optimizing your character builds.
I ended up choosing the Urchin background for my Tabaxi Shadow Sorcerer. It fit the story I am trying to tell, and it also gave the character a very Roguish feel. Considering my character's party does not have a Rogue, this has ended to be to our advantage.
I often list options I like and start narrowing things down from there. There are a lot of Background options, both from various books as well as Homebrew. Just make sure your DM is fine with what you choose.
