Playing as a Fiend Warlock, Dark One's Blessing triggers whenever I reduce a hostilecreature to 0 hit points.
My character already has a collection of small sacrificial pets I commonly use to prepare my hex to carry over a short rest.
I am wondering if I could turn one of these pets hostile toward me by casting and breaking concentration of the 'Friends' cantrip and then easily killing the critter in order to trigger Dark One's Blessing and gain the temporary hit points?
That... wow. It technically works, and feels on-brand for being a Fiend Warlock (assuming you are playing into the corruption). It is the fabled “bag of rats” problem, which the whole hostile restriction was meant to stop.
If your DM is ok with you doing the hex thing, they are probably ok with this, but you should ask them because it is pretty cheesy.
Friends can only be cast on a creature that isn't already hostile in order to make it hostile. It really seems to have no other use. It's probably already hostile from having been squished in with a bunch of other critters in the sack. You have to communicate with your target somehow, and with no Verbal component they apparently don't expect you to speak. The material component is makeup you apply to your face. How do you make a critter understand your hostility without actually attacking it? What's the point of casting the spell?
Grab the critter, move the hex off it if there happens to be one, squish it in your hand or stomp on it if you're fastidious. Enjoy your temporary hit points.
I mean, sure maybe it might tEcHnIcAlLy meet the literal requirements of the spell. But that just seems like a bit of a cop out to me. You'd basically be carrying around a bag full of furry, squirming, living Healing Potions.
Personally, I think it's fair to require that the "hostile creature" that you have to kill should be something that has a listed Challenge Rating. But that's just me. Bottom line, it's up to your DM.
There are a whole bunch of CR zero creatures that are official. Requiring an "official" CR doesn't impede this at all.
But... being a demon worshipping fanatic, who regularly performs blood sacrifices to his demon lord, is the sort of thing that gets attention. As a DM, I'd completely allow this -in fact, I think it plays brilliantly into the concept of a Fiend Warlock- but I'd also include a cost. At first, it might just be certain merchants refusing business, and the acolytes at the temple refusing him services. As his infamy progresses, there might be public outcry at his presence in public (forcing him to be clever in accomplishing things).
I try very hard not to "say no" to stuff like this, as a DM. But that's entirely separate from granting a free ride.
