Hey all, so my next campaign is coming soon. it's set around and it's a low magic setting. Most of the characters are going to be sorcerers and wizards. My DM and I thought it would be cool for me to play a warlock disguised as a sorcerer. I loved the idea but realized that I have never played a sorcerer before. Anyone have any little tips for roleplay and such?
A big part of it is just to not mention what you're doing out loud in-character. There's a lot of stuff that we, as players, know about the game world that wouldn't actually be obvious to people in-game. Whether you're casting Mage Armor on yourself using a spell slot or through an invocation isn't visibly different. When your character completes a short rest don't say, "Ah, I have regained my spell slots thanks to this short rest", just quietly continue to cast spells.
Reflavor your Eldritch Blast so it looks like a different spell... maybe claim that it's some unique form of Magic Missile. Honestly, Sorcerer is probably the easiest subclass to fake as a Warlock... it's a subclass where you can, within roleplay, claim that you don't fully understand how your abilities work and won't feel obligated to explain the mechanics at any point.
Beyond that I would have to know what subclass you intend to play as. Some have pretty obvious tells... if you're an Undead Warlock your Form of Dread will give you away in an instant, but if you were a Great Old One Warlock there's nothing that is outwardly evident unless you want there to be.
I would take the Magic Initiate (Sorcerer) feat and Pact of the Tome with the Book of Ancient Secrets Invocation. Tell everyone that you took the Ritual Caster feat. That will make you look a lot more like a Sorcerer than a Warlock.
Firstly go Fiend Patron, they get some of the blaster spells like Fireball then, at level 3, go Pact of the Tome.
For your three cantrips I would suggest Fire Bolt, Shocking Grasp and Mending since those are all spells that Sorcerers get but Warlocks don't. Remember you can take Chill Touch from the Warlock list, but if you're not playing at least some Warlock spells why not play Sorcerer? Take your eldritch blast, but don't mention what you're casting, just "I roll to hit" "I roll damage" etc. For your Warlock cantrips start with Eldritch Blast and Prestidigitation, and take Mage Hand at level 3.
That'll give you two ranged cantrips, one melee cantrip, and three utility cantrips.
For invocations, at level 2 I would take Agonizing Blast and Armor of Shadows. You might be pretending to be a Sorcerer but you're going to need reliable damage.
To make yourself more appropriately Fiendish, how about taking Tiefling as your race. Your patron could be Asmodeus. Switch the +1 int to +1 dex so you can start with 16 dexterity.
If you take the Infernal Constitution feat at level 4 that will add resistance to cold and poison damage to your existing resistance to fire, and add +1 con, so you can start with 13 con and bump it to 14 at level 4.
I would suggest that you start with Str 8, Dex 16, Con 13, Int 10, Wis 10, Cha 17, and also grab Fey Touched at level 8 to get 18 Cha and free Misty Step and another divination or enchantment spell. The best background in my opinion is Urchin, since it provides Stealth, Sleight of Hand, Thieves' Tools, and Disguise Kit proficiencies.
The Book of Ancient Secrets is a big invocation investment when all it does is net you two ritual spells. I would prioritize Agonizing Blast, Armor of Shadows, and Mask of Many Faces ahead of it.
If you just want a bunch of spells to fake being a sorcerer, you can take 1 level of arcana cleric for more spell slots, some utility cantrips from the sorc/wiz spell list, magic missile, and the arcana proficiency for making spell scrolls to make your spells go even further. You can easily fake being a Divine soul sorc.
Edit: Roll this in with Variant human for magic initiate going into pact of the tome warlock, and you'll also be a cantrip master with more spell slots than the actual full casters for the first few levels.

When you let go an Eldritch Blast shout, "Magic Missile!"
at higher levels shout, "Ray of Enfeeblement!" or "Devastation Ray of Merduck!" "Fizban's Fabulous Force Bolt!"
