If you want melee proficiency you could choose the Hexblade and get much of the benefits without multiclassing.
If you are set on multiclassing the fighter is a good choice but I will suggest Tempest Cleric. Martial proficiency, heavy armor and more spells- healing among them!
You can also choose Pact of the Blade without going Hexblade. You become proficient with any melee weapon you manifest as a pact weapon. The Improved Pact Weapon invocation extends pact weapons to include long and short bows as well light and heavy crossbow, adds +1 to hit and damage and allows the weapon to be used as a spell casting focus.
For classes that have light but not medium armour, the Moderately Armored feat is worth a look, +1 to STR or DEX, and medium armour and shield proficiencies. Non Hexblade melee Warlocks are possible, if a little MAD.
Thinking of multi-classing my level two warlock as soon as possible with a single level of fighter purely for the martial weapon proficiency.
Worth it or would I be better just relying on keeping out of too much melee?
I've got a plethora of daggers and hand axes, and my arcane focus is usable as a quarterstaff so I'm not defenceless.

Thanks for the input, I'll have a look into those options 👍
