I have an aberrant mind sorcerer and want to multi-class 1-2 levels into warlock but am having trouble deciding on a subclass.
The character is intended to be the herald of some as yet to be identified elder evil. The Great Old One warlock subclass would clearly fit. However, Awakened Mind, the only level 1 ability of the GOO warlock, adds little to Telepathic Speech, the level 1 ability of the Aberrant Mind sorcerer, because it only allows for 1-way communication. I like the Undead warlock subclass. There was an episode of the Real Ghostbusters in the 1980s that included an antagonist who was undead and served an elder evil named the Dark Entity (see https://ghostbusters.fandom.com/wiki/Jeremy). However, I am aware of only one undead-themed elder evil, Atropus, and I would prefer a more traditional, Chthulu-esque patron, such as Hadar, Acamar, or Tharizdun. A third option could be Hexblade, but I am unaware of any elder evil associated with the shadowfell.
Can anyone provide thoughts or suggestions for an appropriate patron and warlock subclass? I would even be open to homebrew ideas, which I would discuss with my DM.
Almost all of them sort of work in that they are extra planar beings giving you power, aberrant mind is the beyond but there is nothing saying the beyond you focus on isn't themed in some way like infernally. That being said I think fathomless gives very similar vibes as goo and aberrant mind with the least work. I'm sure you could spin something up with genie as well with the fundamentals of the universe being primordial in nature, so the closest bridge to the beyond is the elemental planes.
Thanks for the response. I considered Fathomless as well. Would make the most sense if I was actually serving Cthulhu, who I believed was entombed in the oceans. Additionally, like GOO, it does overlap with AM abilities (namely Gift of the Sea with Revelation in Flesh water breathing and swim speed). However, from a practical standpoint, Fathomless is quite a ways ahead of GOO for a 1-2-level dip.
