My 1st thought was to have a GOO subclass. I did not know that GOO was based on H. P. Lovecraft stories and creatures.
My background is based on the Trading places movie characters Randolph and Mortimer Duke. Two very old and powerful beings that are betting on the ole philosophy debate Nature versus Nurture.
My character would have abilities that suggest fighter, probably LG alignment. Low int/wis and average cha. Therefore, he is "randomly" picked to be subject of the bet and turned into a Warlock at 1st level.
Is GOO still a good subclass? Should I do Archfey instead? Not sure if Fiend can work, and celestial does not seem like it would do?
I only have the 2024 handbook so no other sources. This is going to be more about roleplaying then a min/max character. This is basically an idiot savant magic user.
Great Old One or Archfey probably fit the best. GOO for the old, bored patron. Archfey for the trickster, slightly comedic patron.
On the other hand, you could probably go with either Fiend or Celestial if the bet was between patrons of those types. The kind of "opposites attract" type friends.
I think you can get away with any of the PHB subclasses if you flavor it the right way. Play what you want to play.
The flavor of Great Old One suggests a being which tends to barely know their warlock even exists. You can ignore the flavor, of course, but you may want to consider a being which has much more of an interest in mortals. I like the idea of the pair of Fiend and Celestial as your "two old men" making the bet, but Archfey works too.
