I'm entertaining an idea for a Warlock (2014) with the Archaeologist background whose patron is Olmec from "Legends of the Hidden Temple", or a similarly styled entity, tasked with retrieving artifact/legendary-level magic items of historical import from whatever campaign setting she may find herself in, but I'm having a hard time discerning what type of patron Olmec would be classified as from the options available. I've narrowed it down to three choices: The Great Old One, The Genie (Dao), and The Undying. I'm leaning towards Great Old One, reflavoring cosmic horror as ancient temple consciousness, but Genie (Dao) has some thematic merit as well with stony spells, and I can reflavor the genie's bottle as temporary shelter in his Hidden Temple. What do you guys think?
The Dao Genie patron probably makes the most narrative sense. I would probably play it that Olmec is a vessel in which it either has chosen to live or was trapped in eons ago. The stony spells like Meld into Stone and Wall of Stone will be very thematic for an entity you find in an ancient stone temple. I think it is also the strongest of the three subclasses.
Great Old One could also work fairly well too, especially if you play it as if you can feel theconsciousness you make a pact throughout the whole temple, but you can only communicate with it at statue of Olmec.
Undying would be my last pick, but with a little work I think you could sell it ok. It's probably the weakest of the subclasses mechanically, so there is that to consider as well.
