So one of my players wants to play a warlock with a celestial patron and thinks about going for NE as his alignment. So my question is: would that combination even work and if so, how? I'm having a hard time coming up with a reason as to why a celestial would make a pact with an NE player or how that relationship would look like during the game.. So any thoughts on that would be appreciated!
It makes as much sense as a warlock who is good having a fiend patron, IE, none or you can make it work- so what celestials would contemplate this? depends on how your buddy will play of course but.. imagine a celestial in a bet / propostion with other celestials - if those of good heart can fall from grace to these pacts then surely granting the light to an evil creature could elevate it to the higher path.
Or - It is the patron. The character is neutral evil - ie - balance maintained but selfish. So if they steal and indulge themselves fine as long as they also help out those in need and maintain a balance. At the end of the day, a warlock defying its patron is in a similar boat to a cleric defying its god - there is nothing they can do to stop them being stripped of their powers for refusing to do their duty. (if that is the DM's wish)
Or - the patron is a 'celestial' Deathpact angel from Ravnica (a lawful evil 'celestial') who is absolutely fine with the warlock squandering its gifts because in life it will keep bringing money to it (its what they do) and in death they remain as trapped spirits the angel eats for funsies.
Ooh I like the option with the Deathpact angel! But your whole answer has helped me a great deal! I'll talk to my friend and see what he thinks about some of those options, but I think I have a clearer view about how I could make this work
Glad to help. Table /skype Roleplaying games real advantage over computer games is Freedom. Whether its the option to move to the side of the door and turn the handle to open it with a pair of tongs to avoid a potential trap or thinking through a non standard way to achieve a win ( sneaking in to a ballroom in a castle and replacing the regular candles with toxic smoke spewing ones and waiting for the masked ball to become Masque of the red death ) To thinking through how to bring your world to life / character to life. Pretty much anything is possible as long as it follows the following principles - The person who wants it can come up with something to make it work. The DM decides it doesnt damage the game world in either a lore or science way, and its supported by rules.
Even the rules are a guide, nothing more. When they fail you, fix it yourself, and when you see a problem and have a good relationship with your table of players ask them when they propose something if they have thought through what would happen if the NPC's used it against them. (its a good start to make the most blatant oversteps obvious)
I hope you and your players have a bunch of fun and make a host of great memories :)
The character could want to accomplish a very specific task and in order to accomplish that task, he has to gain support from a good power. Possibly the good power sees potential for greatness in the character or a prophecy indicates the character will play a key role in some future event that the good power wants to see come to fruition.
