Im designing a Warlock but I have no clue how to pick a Patron, I don't even know what kind of Warlock I want him to be but I'm not going for a necromancer type. If you have any suggestions as to what kind of Patron to go for, be my guest and tell.
Agreed. I’d write your back story first. Describe who your warlock is and what his/her history is and then look at that and use that to pick your patron. Although in my case I write the start of the back story and then pick the patron and write the rest of the back story with the patron in it. But I still start with my warlock’s background and use that to pick his patron.
I just started a campaign where I am playing a Warlock and I based my patron on what would fit with the group the most. One of my good friend is playing a Oath of Devotion paladin so I went with that and I chose the Celestial Patron. Gave me lots of stuff to do and made some character ties with somebody else.
Perhaps start by thinking about the personality of both your Warlock and the patron you'd like to have, without considering what type of patron it is. Think about the relationship between them, the circumstances that led your Warlock to make a pact with them. Did they seek out the power? Was it inherited? Was it offered? Is your patron using you to further its own desires? Helping you to achieve a goal? Trying to corrupt you? Each patron type has some classic scenarios associated with it, but there's always room to create something different.
Why not tell us a bit more about what your Warlock to be like, and maybe we can point you in a direction. Maybe look for a couple of spells you would probably make your go-to options. Looking to be tricksy and enchanting? Maybe Archfey is your thing. Want to debilitate foes and mess with their heads? Perhaps Great Old One. Looking to punish and just lay the beat down? Maybe Fiend or Hexblade. Or perhaps you're looking for something more support-focused, like a Cleric or Paladin but looking for a more personal relationship with a higher being? Celestial. Each type of patron has some classic concepts, but there's always room for you to put a new twist on things.

Each patron has it's place in the game, and each is better and worse at different things than other patrons.
What do you want your backstory or field of focus to be? What sources do you have access to?
