Let’s build a Tomelock inspired by art by this art from Keith Parkinson!
His real name is Ghentwhorm but he goes by many names: Old Dread, Brother Ivan, Uncle Nod. He is a slow-moving, kindly old (insert race here) who gathers occult secrets and stories of the dead in his Tome of Magic called the Dreadword.
So what is his race, patron, background and backstory? Inspiration wanted!
His ancestry might be Goblin, or Tiefling, but Halfling or Dwarf would also work.
Patron: Undying (He want's to know secrets of the dead).
Background: Cloistered Scholar, or Sage
Maybe he found the Dreadword, within the archives at Candlekeep. It may have whispered to him, or if he tried to get a senior Librarian to authorise a book loan- the Librarian stated that that book is not within the catalogue and really should not be anyway- as it's an accounting ledger that is 10 years old- so really should be destroyed. So as a good little scholar- you took it for yourself as you realised the true treasure it is.
Ghentworm is a halfling. His pact is the Great Old Ones with a patron of Zargon the Returner.
Ghentworm is researching the secrets of long lost knowledge and in doing so managed to find a way to telepathically reach out to his patron. Zargon calls to him, offering the secrets of ancient rituals reserved for those of divine status. This relationship has slowly disfigured Ghentworm, as his forehead has grown bony protrusions similar to his patron. he has become more of a recluse as he reads from his Book of Ancient Secrets, constantly listening in his subconscious for Zargon to call out to him with more promises of power. Indeed, while some see Ghentworm have hushed conversations his someone only he can see, rumors are that he speaks of things before they happen (you want the Second Chance feat).
I see this guy as someone who has possibly bartered his sanity to evoke rituals that haven't been tried in centuries... for good reason!

Many options for Ghentwhorm, Uncle Nod etc

Undying or UA Undead Patron?
Also, what's up with the bony carapace on his head? A halfling/Klingon hybrid?
Its your choice.
What do you think is more interesting- as to Patron?
Halfling with a bit of Tiefling or Orc or demon.
Here's my quick build;
