I'm playing a githyanki fighter/wizard (chronurgy). He's currently fighter 1/wizard 3, but the leveling on the server is pretty quick, so I need to plan his build now. Stats are a modified array; after racial ASI, he's Str 15, Dex 12, Con 16, Int 20, Wis 10, Cha 9. And he's a space pirate, so he came with Tough from the Wildspacer background.
The plan is to take Wizard levels to Fighter 1/Wizard 6, then dip his second level for Fighter 2/Wizard 6, then Wizard the rest of the way to 20.
He's definitely picking up War Caster at Wizard 4. Between Tough, Con save prof from Fighter, heavy armor, and the ability to use Green-Flame Blade with a Str-based martial weapon, he's going to be pretty tanky for a wizard. Fighter 2 gives him Action Surge, which is going to be fantastic on a full caster (especially on a time wizard, since he's going to go all Matrix for flavor).
The big question is what feat to take at Wizard 8. Two main contenders are Heavy Armor Master and Lucky. While normally, I'd never touch HAM, it might actually be strong here. The half-ASI evens up his Str, and being able to absorb damage over time is going to further beef him up, plus reduce the DC on conc checks by 1-2 on 21+ damage attacks. (Slasher is also a contender, but given that he's not getting extra attacks, going crit fishing with GFB seems worse than soaking up physical damage.)
The other main contender is Lucky. It's a powerful feat on its own, plays into his time manipulation flavor, and lets him save Chronal Shift for other targets. The main downside is that he doesn't get that +1 Str to increase his accuracy with GFB.
Go with lucky, because HAM's value goes down the higher in levels you go. Between your con save proficiency and advantage on concentration checks, HAM's mitigation is grasping at straws. Big hits are probably going to be magical anyways. Heck, you might even be dead by then if your concentration checks are that big.
Lucky, on the other hand, will come in handy for making saves, which become more important as you level up. In one case, one feat gets worse while the other keeps getting better. Clear cut choice.
Well, I ended up deciding to take Lucky today over War Caster (which I'll probably pick up at Wizard 8). Even though +2 AC is certainly tempting, a githyanki wizard with greatsword is just too iconic for a gish (which I mean in the most literal way possible, in the original Gith language). I'll want to pick up some gauntlets/belt of <big thing> strength anyway.
