So my Abjuration Wizard is getting up in levels to the point where I will have to make my multiclass decision soon. I am taking one level in Rogue for expertise to be used with Arcana and Investigation. He is a Sage and doesn't have very many damaging combat spells prepared ever, just more of a battlefield controller as well as amazing with Arcana and Investigation. Whenever there are puzzles or secret passages or traps he just plows through without any issues (which is great for our ADD fighter that will not let a discussion on tactics last more than 2 minutes before he Leroy Jenkins out of a room and pushes onward).
I am obviously taking Wizard to 17 first, but am debating on when to take the Rogue level. I tend to stay away from combat as much as possible and normally don't get targeted and have yet to exhaust all my level one spell slots on shield in a fight yet although getting to 18 in Wizard will get me infinite shield and invisibility. 19 will get another ASI which is nice but not necessary and would push Rogue to my level 20 where there is a lack of content. The expertise will give me +18 to Arcana and my passive investigation will be 33 so Rogue is a huge boost to trap finding and basically being Sherlock Holmes walking into a room and knowing everything (right now my passive investigation is only 25 which is still pretty sick). Any thoughts on when to take that dip? Not needing mage armor anymore is a cool thing too with having light armor proficiency. Taking at 18 is what I am leaning toward as that is only 2 levels into tier 4 content and being able to find every trap that, at that level, could be super lethal would be a great thing to have, as well as the insane arcana.
So I took Rogue at 19 as I really wanted unlimited Misty Step and unlimited Shield first. After playing through 19 and a couple session at level 20 I can say without a doubt that taking a level in Rogue is amazing. Do not take you Wizard to 20 as 2 extra level 3 spells is a joke whereas expertise is amazing! Even in low light or moving quickly I never miss a trap and god help anyone attacking with a sphere of annihilation with my +18 arcana, it does not end well for them.
First level 20 too yay!

Whatever you do, don't take more than two rogue levels. Spell Mastery is just that good.
