Long Story Short, we start playing Stormking's Thunder in about a week. We start at level 5, everyone gets an unusual magic item
The party consists of the following members: Tortle Druid - Circle of Spore Tabaxxi Monk - Way of Mercy Loxodon Fighter - Rune Knight
I will be playing as a Dhampir Wizard, but am split between the subclasses, namely Order of the Scribe or Blood Magic (CR). The DM has suggested that we belong to a faction (Harpers, Force Grey etc), I have agreed with him that my Wizard will be part of Force Gray.
Now to my questions: - Have you guys had any experience with these subclasses? - What is the difference? - which one is better / fits the group? - Is there a better uncommon magic item for wizards than an Arcane Grimoire +1?
To your first question, no, I'm afraid not. The difference between the two is that Scribes are overall more versatile and powerful, while Blood Magic tries to focus on damage, and has one cool feature at 6th level. Scribes is mechanically better by a long shot, and may work better for the party, but Blood Magic will be great for roleplay, and will fit into you being a Dhampir perfectly. For your last question, probably not, although there probably are some other good ones.
I like order of scribes better as a subclass (my 2nd choice after evoker) and it is versatile, but blood magic thematically goes well with Dhampir. I would go scribes. I don't know how often you'll use that bite unless you're carrying around a bag of rats. :)
I would throw out that someone else asked a similar question about magic items, and if you do go scribes, you might want a spell scroll which you can then learn annd put into your book. If only to add an extra damage type and make use of the class feature. And also because level 3 spells have a lot of top tier choices — fireball, fly, counterspell, dispel magic, hypnotic pattern, thunder step, and many more.
Since you’re starting at level 5, hopefully you’ll be allowed to have a couple more spells than the starting plus 2/level, to reflect ones you came across over your adventures. If not, I’d really look at a scroll.
Simply put, if you want to be strong, be a Scribe. If you want to be an interesting and exceptionally thematic character, Blood Magic is the way to go.
Good point Xalthu. You need a lot of spells to be a good scribes wizard (for damage types), whether you find scrolls or spellbooks or buy scrolls. I would ask them DM if you will have good sources for gold and for buying scrolls. Low access to gold is why in Strixhaven. I went Evoker instead of scribes.
In terms of gameplay, a Scribe wizard is definitely stronger but if you want a better themed character and objectively more interesting subclass, choose Blood Magic.
