Hey hey. I was just invited to play in the tail end of my DM's second campaign. I'm a 15th level scribes Wizard. My third session is on Sunday and we're fighting an ancient white dragon. I love this character, but jumping into a 15th level wizard is pretty intimidating. Even worse, this Dragon is particularly angry at my character, so I need to be defensive. Any tips on tactics/spell selection for a scribes wizard with 12 AC (unbuffed) to survive and contribute to an ancient Dragon fight would be greatly appreciated! My party has a Blood Hunter, Sorceror, Pal-lock, Monk, and Druid. Since I came in at lvl 15, I have access to a ton of spells. Thanks for your help guys!
Look to the low lvl spells; mage armor, and shield; Those 2 should get you to 20ac with a base of 12.
Then look at movement; Expeditious retreat (great spell but requires concentration), misty step, fly etc for your self. Don't get trapped, don't get hit.
Now look at offence; what's your best way to hurt the sob? Don't over look simple spells like magic missile for the auto hit. Uncast Scorching Ray? Keep your good spells ready; disintegrate and the like but don't waist them if it has resistances available.
De buff /mess with. Even if you force the dwagon to burn his resistances that's a win. Power word pain would be a good one toward the end of the fight. Wall of Force to control the playing field. Banishment would be a good one to have even if it's just to buy your party a min of recuperation. Confusion would be great to throw at it over and over, try and burn up it's resistances, even if you just success in burning up it's turn a couple of time's it works.
I would play the roll of spoiler. Stay out of it's reach. Cast Wall of Force to trap/control it. Use Confusion over and over to totally mess up it's attach rolls, once it's resistance are burned up now you can start disintegrating, word of pain etc it and burn it down. Heck even just range attacking magic missile up cast would be a lot of damage over a few rounds. All this time your running flying, blinking all over cussing out his mother while your party is hacking it's tail off.
Defense/Tanking: Shield, Mage Armor, Wall of Force/Stone, Absorb Elements.
Mobility: Haste, Fly, Misty Step, Thunder Step, Far Step.
Damage: Fireball, Disintegrate, Scorching Ray, Finger Of Death, Incendiary Cloud, Cloudkill, Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, etc.
Use Absorb Elements to make yourself resistant to its breath weapon, make sure you're out of range of most of its attacks, use Wall of Force to either trap it, force it a certain direction, or shield yourself from it. Use Haste to either buff yourself or your more martial based companions, like the Blood hunter and Monk. If it does hit you with an attack, use Shield to attempt to protect yourself. If you just want it dead, make sure you get of a strong concentration damage spell like Incendiary Cloud, and then keep blasting it with Fireballs, Fingers of Death, and Disintegrates until its dead. Good Luck!
Thanks for all the tips guys. Fight went great! It lasted about 3.5 hours! I put her in a Maze and we burned down all her minions and then set ourselves in really good positioning. Dropped concentration and brought her back. After she burned all 5 legendary resistances, I hit her with a Mental Prison! She failed the save and fell to the ground restrained where she was severely beaten up until our sorcerer finished her off with a Disintegrate that turned her into green ash. I had a great time and learned a lot about higher level fights. Thanks for the help!
