So I'm building up a wizard for a west march server and I'm trying to figure out which race fits better.
Human free feat is great, and as I'm trying to build him as a summoner, I'd probably take Warcaster, but the Assimar flight seems really useful. I can't decide, so what do you think? The concentration advantage is nice, but flying above the danger would negate all that, but I can only do it once over a long rest while Warcaster is permanent
Are you playing with the 2014 or 2024 rules? If you are playing with 2024 rules, Variant Human can not take Warcaster as their free feat because it now has a level requirement of 4+. You would only be able to take another origin feat unless your DM houserules it (just like the updated regular Human).
Personally, I would probably go with the Aasimar. Darkvision, resistance to Necrotic/Radiant damage, and their Celestial Revelation (fly speed!) are all pretty good. [spells]Light[/spells as a free cantrip is a nice perk. Plus it puts a small heal on your Wizard who normally wouldn't have any healing options. Very nice in case your party healer goes down and needs to be brought back into the fight.
Now if you are playing with the 2014 rules and can take a full feat, it is hard to pass that up. Warcaster or Resilient - Constitution is a really nice starting trait for a Wizard. So in the end, I would say 2014 = Variant Human, 2024 = Aasimar.
It's 2014 rules, which is why I'm allowed War caster to begin with. One last question, my current stats are 8,14,13 (+1), 15 (+1), 12, 10. As human i only get +1 to two stats and this is what I ended up with. I do want more con both for saving throws and general hp, but know I'd have to sacrifice either Wisdom or Charisma to 8 in order to get it there. 10 is the lowest I'd like either and I like not having any negative stats besides athletics, but is it worth it sucking at either of these for a few extra points or is 14 enough con to work with?
Goal is my character isn't bad at anything (10 being average NPC) besides his strength cause he's a brainy boy. Thoughts on mechanics/role play impact?
I generally find that my caster characters can get by with only 14 Constitution. The extra hit points are not strictly necessary, and with War Caster you should have your concentration fairly well protected. If you find you later find you are getting your spells interrupted regularly, you can always take Resilient - Constitution to really shore up those concentration checks. In fact, I would recommend you do so once you have your Intelligence maxed and any other important build feats secured.
You make a good point, though I am considering swapping wisdom and charisma around. That way when my character brings facts and logic to the table with his high intellect people are more likely to listen. Worth it? Or is the +1 to Wis preferred for saving throws and the like?
Have you thought about going with a Goliath for better damage mitigation? Their "Stone’s Endurance" ability lets you reduce damage once per short rest, which can be really helpful at lower levels when you might be more vulnerable. This could keep you alive longer in tougher fights.
Alternatively, if you're looking for a way to reset your 8-hour spells like Mage Armor more easily, an Elf might be a good option. Their "Trance" ability lets them take a long rest in just 4 hours, meaning you could potentially cast Mage Armor, then take a 4-hour rest while still keeping all your spell slots and then go for another 4 hours of adventuring. It gives you more flexibility with spellcasting and keeping up your defenses.
Just some things to consider when choosing a race for your summoner!

Appreciate the feedback!
