Hi all! I realize that Mage Armor is still likely to be the most common way an Abjurer creates their Arcane Ward, but I've multiclassed to gain armor proficiency.
That means, it's likely that I won't have my Arcane Ward up and running when combat begins--I'm guessing it will be triggered when I cast the Shield spell.
Since Shield interposes between the attack and my wizard, and creating the Ward is simultaneous to casting the spell, it's not a far leap to say that the ward would take the attack's damage if it still hit.
By way of example: I have an AC of 16. Attacker hits with an total attack roll of 22. I cast shield. The enemy's attack hits anyway and the damage goes to my ward first. That sound about right?
