In a game I am running there is a tournament of spell schools, each school has a team of 4 ( level 14,10,6,3). Each team gets a week to prepare.
The rules are
Any level 1 and cantrips Only 1 second level spell of no restriction on school
All other spells must be from their school.
Some of these are pretty straight forward divination and necromancy don't have a lot to pick from however I am having problems picking evocation and abjuration and conjunction.
I would appreciate any suggestions from these three schools that a wizard under these restrictions might pick. If they were to enter a tournament like this with a week to prep
Evocation is probably the most proactive spell list. You going to be trying to zapping your enemies with Lightning Bolt, trapping them in a Wall of Fire, or blinding them with Sunbeam. This is where the most straight-forward damage is.
Conjuration also has some pretty potent effects in battle. For damage, Cloud of Daggers does damage with no save, and the various summon spells like Summon Fey are pretty good as well since they put extra bodies on the battlefield. Conjuration also includes a lot of in-battle utility spells like Misty Step, Web, and Dimension Door. All great spells.
Abjuration is where all of the defensive magic is. Dispel Magic, Counterspell, Globe of Invulnerability...all great spells, but all lacking in damage output. You would be hard to kill, but you would probably have to rely on up-cast versions of Scorching Ray (for single target) or Chromatic Orb (for the bouncing crowd damage) to get any real damage output.
Personally, I would go with Conjuration. A nice mix of damage, utility, and survivability. Imagine a party of four that all leads off with Summon Fey, Summon Aberration, Summon Construct, and Summon Elemental. Suddenly your team outnumbers the other team 2:1. I like those odds.

Many thanks.
