I’m using my starting gold of 130 gold as a wizard with the background of entertainer to purchase items before starting the campaign I’m in.
After a bit of coffe and rummaging through the items pages in the PHB at 2 am, I found that there was no exact specification for the initial price of charcoal, insense and herbs. I did research online and found the prices from other books in similar games.
Herb - 2 sp (50 for 10 gp)
Charcoal - 1 sp (100 for 10 gp)
Insense - 1 sp (100 for 10 gp)
I hopefully got my math correct. It was late and I was determined to do the math.
My question is: For the spell ‘Find Familiar’, is it ten gold for all the items in total, or is it 10 per item? I wanted to buy these as part of my items before the campaign starts, only because my character has a close bond to his familiar, Pasqual, who tends to get in trouble. Because of this, my character bought components for the spell when immediately traveling into town, only because he worries about not being with his weasel friend.
On top of that, I tried looking at whether or not I could purchase my background items (entertainer) with my gold pieces but all I could see people saying was I could not receive these items. Can I still purchase a musical instrument? And can I still purchase a spell book, component pouch and scholars pack? Or does having his gold completely cause me to be barred from purchasing them?
For the first question, I am pretty sure that 10 gold is the value of each type of material component in FInd Familiar.
The second question is not entirely clear to me. I would say: of course you can purchase the items, once you find someone selling them. I am not sure why you have been forbidden to purchase them.
For the first question, I am pretty sure that 10 gold is the value of each type of material component in FInd Familiar.
I disagree with Filcat. I believe that 10gp is the total value of Find Familiar, with the amounts being divided between your herbs, charcoal, and incense. This is also implied by Jeremy Crawford in this sage advice-- 10gp of other components, not 30gp of all components combined/10gp each material.
2nd question: You can absolutely use your new starting GP to purchase items you would have otherwise received. It doesn't preclude you from those items, it just means you don't have to choose those items-- And it may cost you more in the long run.
* - (10 gp worth of charcoal, incense, and herbs that must be consumed by fire in a brass brazier)
The only part that matters is there is 10 gold worth of material components, the rest is flavor. no one worries about the "bat guano" required for fireball.
the brazier is the big question mark imo as its totally vague...some say you can have a traveling brazier in your pocket. some just go by the rule that you find one when you get to any type of decent town / building (i use this one). its something that, imo, should be discussed with the DM if you plan on using your familiar in risky situations as it'll die and then you'll need to go through the ritual.
For equipment & gold, you pick an option ("When you create your character, you receive equipment based on a combination of your class and background. Alternatively, you can start with a number of gold pieces based on your class and spend them on items from the lists in this chapter. See the Starting Wealth by Class table to determine how much gold you have to spend").
You roll for wealth. In that case you get gold and zero equipment so you have to buy everything OR
you get equipment from two sources A) your class - you get i) quarterstaff or dagger, ii) component pouch or arcane focus, iii) scholar pack or explorer pack, and iv) a spellbook and B) more items from your Entertainer background, which is your musical instrument, clothing, a letter, and 15 gp.
Normally yes, but it's really fun to have players who have been captured and imprisoned in a dungeon gather those flavor components to cast their spells. Makes for a fun session. :)

The cost to cast Find Familiar is 10 gold.

Yes, I stand corrected. It makes more sense to indicate the total value of all the material components.
Since costs of Braziers and size are difficult to find you might want to try this https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Brazier
