So I'm starting a new campaign with a level 5 wizard and would like to use one of these as my familiar. My DM already said it's fine, but now I have to pick one.
The Tressym is "stronger" between the two with an 11 intelligence and ability to understand common, not to mention great scouting potential and a free invisibility/poison radar is a nice add on. I actually used one as a familiar before in a short lived Tombs of Annihilation run. We wiped at level 1, so I never got a lot done with my magic and had to rely a lot on being creative with my familiar.
They Flying Monkey stats are a little less by comparison, but the real draw is it has hands, meaning unlike the cat can interact with more things and even items. In my other game, a familiar with hands would have definitely come in handy... no pun intended. It would have been able to do pretty much anything the cat could do, but not be as stealth oriented.
What are your thoughts on both and which would you recommend? I'm playing a Chronurgy Wizard focused on controlling the battlefield and supporting my team if that impacts anything.
I would go with the Tressym. It will by far be a better scout and helper with See Invisibility, Poison Sense, and Darkvision. The lack of hands should rarely be an issue, and you could always change their form in the rare cases where you want them to have hands for something specific.
