Im currently running a game , and my players want to have their own wizard tower. I've looked around but haven't found any information on how a player would go about creating one, or having one created. what would the cost, spells, and general time be in order to create even the most basic tower. i know that this is a very open ended and convoluted subject open to interpretation. but any input on how someone would go about creating one in game would be helpful.
Just consider what it would take as a practical matter given the campaign setting, work off the DMG stronghold rules as a starting point, and add in imagination. Page 128 of the DMG suggests costs and time to build various types of strongholds. There's even a fortified tower option. Personally, I'd consider this a starting point for a wizard, who might desire additional protections and features depending on their magical interests. Location is a consideration too: are they building in a safe, civilized area or in the wilderness? The former might require more seclusion, the latter more defenses, for example.
I recommend letting the player design and make decisions given constraints of time, materials, cost, and labor available. And magic. There are lots of spells that could assist a mage to build a tower, from those manipulating earth and stone to those summoning creatures that could aid in the construction (earth elemental, anyone?). There are also lots of opportunities for story or quests if the wizard wishes to add unique elements, materials, or magics beyond their normal ability. Have fun!
Thanks for the responses I must have glazed over that section in the dmg, I think I have a good enough foundation to consider what it would take to create one.
My evil wizard was going to use Galder’s however my band of misfits needs to stay in the move so I found a Baba Yaga hut spell in the home brew section that is awesome. We killed a young white dragon to use for the legs and stole an outhouse for the outer shell of our legged TARDIS. Now we live in an AT-ST until I get access to Mordy”s mansion.

The best that there is in the official rules is Building a Stronghold in the DMG.

Galder's Tower from the LOST LABORATORY OF KWALISH is another possibility for the basic structure.

Thank you guys for this. My PC wizard has a far-off goal of creating a wizard's tower, so this has been very helpful.
Randomly happened upon this thread, check out Strongholds and Followers, it includes rules for creating and leveling up different strongholds including wizard towers. https://shop.mcdmproductions.com/collections/strongholds-followers-books
There was a 3e book(I'll look at it later) about strongholds that mostly works for 5e.
I have a weird sense of humor.
I also make maps.(That's a link)
