I’m playing an Arcana Cleric 4/ Wizard 1. I plan on taking 1 more level of Wizard after I hit level 5 in Cleric. I was thinking of going for the School of Divination for the Portent feature or War Magic for Arcane Deflection and Tactic Wit.
School of Divination: I don’t exactly know how I would use Portent but low rolls could be very helpful with my Channel Divinity Features: Turn Undead and Arcane Abjuration. I might give high rolls to the party’s mighty Paladin or use for my own attack rolls. I rely on Shillelagh + booming blade or GFB + Spiritual Weapon for melee.
School of War Magic: My AC is 17 now, so Arcane Deflection would help my survivability in melee and save an occasional spell slot that I might otherwise use on the Shield Spell. Tactical Wit would boost my Initiative to +3.
Divination would definitely give my character a great boon twice per day but the benefits of 2 levels of War Magic last over the entire adventuring day.
If you go warmagic, are you happy gimping your casting every time you use arcane deflection? This makes sense with a melee build, but I dunno otherwise.
The other benefit of warmagic [or, THE benefit] is the INT bonus to initiative. How high is your intelligence?
Portent is _always_ good. Use high rolls for your own saves (better than Arcane deflection because it does not interfere with your spells in the following round). Use your low numbers to give your enemies bad saving throw rolls.
Either sound like fun and useful choices, so I'd ask...does one lean more towards the role playing of your character more then the other? Is your character more tactical or more aggressive in battles? Is their arcana cleric side seeking knowledge for knowledge's benefit, or craving more options to defend their friends and smite their foes? Did anything happen in game that would push them towards one path then the other?
I disagree with Katharsis, about going Abjuration. I love Arcane Shield and Abjurationist is my favorite Wizard, but it's level dependant and so not great for "a dip". Abjurationist shines when you have a dip in Cleric and are a Wizard.
I think the other people are have good points. It's kinda what you want. Divinition is cool, but it's only twice a day and if you roll a 10 for your divination it's kinda a waste. If you roll low you can give it to an enemy's save and high you can give it to an ally.
War Magic is nice especially for someone on the front lines. Silmakhor, is correct it will keep you from casting leveled spells on the turn after you use it, but if you usually use cantrips (Shillelagh + Boom/Green-flame Blade + Spiritual Weapon) then you're not really gimping anything. You will have to decide to not use it on a turn you plan to cast a lvled spell, but that won't be every turn. +2 AC or +4 Saving Throw can reeeeeeaaallly save you, and that works every single turn. Also it's "when you are hit by an attack or fail a saving throw" so you can choose to use it *AFTER* you know you are hit or have failed.

What school do you recommend?

My INT is 14, so the bonus would be +2 to initiative. So I guess the overall benefit would be limited.
