Hi, Totally noob magic user here and im struggling with my spell list and how it works. Im joinging a campaign at level 6 and have a +4 int modifier so ive worked out i can prepare 10 spells.
Now does this mean i can add 10 spells of my choice from all the wizard spells, upto spell level 3 to add to my spell book? After a long rest can i change these spells in my spell book? as in, do i know the entire list of wizard spells (upto the level i can cast) but can only choose 10 to be able to cast?
I think ive over thought it all and ended up confusing myself!
You have six spells in your spellbook as of level 1. You gain 2 every level. So at sixth level you have 16 spells in your spellbook. You can prepare 10 of those. Choose the spells you have wisely, as there is no point in having just 3rd level spells when you can't cast them all. Prepared spells can be changed at a long rest. Spellbook spells can never be changed.

Thanks! this makes sense! where does it describe adding 2 spells to spellbook each level? just for future reference! You have got me out of my confused state :D
EDIT: Found it. sleep deprivation from newborn definatly kicking in XD
There was some bad information here (you can always add spells to your spellbook). I am correcting the mistakes they made.
Wizards can learn and put UNLIMITED number of spells into their spell books. The only limit is the spell must be on the wizard spell list.
They start with six wizard spells in their spellbook at 1st level. Every time they go up a level, they learn 2 spells for free and put them in their spell book.
In addition to these 6 free + 2/level, they can learn more spells on the wizard list. They have to either find another wizard to teach them, find another wizard's spell book, or obtain a spell scroll. When they learn a wizard spell this way, they have to pay money and spend time writing them into the spell book.
Just because they know a spell does not mean they can cast it. They can only cast the spells they prepare.
The number of spells they can prepare is limited to their Intelligence modifier plus their wizard level. At level 6, with 18 int, you can PREPARE 6 spells. But you can know every single wizard spell, if you are rich enough to pay people to teach you them.
If you are starting off, generally you start with the minimum number of spells known, which is = to 2* wizard level + 4 (You know 6 at first, = 1*2+4). At 6th level you should know a minimum of 6*2=12+4= 16 spells.
Wizards can ALSO cast any ritual spell they have in their spell book, as a ritual spell. Most likely you will want to start off knowing 10 spells you have to memorize plus 6 ritual spells.
Typically everyone learns the ritual spells Detect Magic and Find Familiar. Both are incredibly useful and no-brainers. Find Familiar is useful for spying and also to give some one the "Help" action, thereby providing Advantage. Many people like Identify, though it has a 100 gp one time cost
So there are the following different lists:
Wizard spell lists - potential to learn and put into your spell book.
Spells in your spell book (those you have learned), you can prepare these spells.
Spells in your spell book that are ALSO ritual spells (you can cast them but it takes 10 minutes)

First off, you don't have to say it critically. Second, we didn't want to make it too complicated. Your note on rituals is very BAD info, as only spells with the ritual tag can be cast as rituals. I said that they would know 16 spells. For the copying of spells, you need 50 gp and 2 hours of time per level of spell. So a level 9 spell needs 18 hours and 450 gp spent to copy the spell. Don't be so critical/rude. Next time just say ' I'll expand on what others have said'. Not 'BAD advice'. Cause weren't wrong, just didn't go into as much detail.

Choose your cantrips wisely and I don't think they can be changed out, only added.
