Thank you. So does that mean there is or is not a bonus that I add as a modifier? And if so, where do I find it?
For example: My 1st class Wizard has a +2 Proficiency Bonus noted at the top of the character sheet. That's probably the "spellcasting ability modifier." But then, there's this "your proficiency bonus." << that must be something in addition.
Can anyone think of a scenario where a spellcaster would get _both_ of those bonuses?
If you're a wizard, a fighter with the Eldritch Knight archetype, or a rogue with the Arcane Trickster archetype, your spellcasting ability is Intelligence. If you're a cleric, druid, or 2nd-level or higher ranger, your spellcasting ability is Wisdom. If you're a bard, sorcerer, warlock, or 2nd-level or higher paladin, your spellcasting ability is Charisma.
Basically, whatever you got your spells from tells you what your spellcasting ability is.

The Player's Handbook says: Your attack bonus with a spell attack equals your spellcasting ability modifier + your proficiency bonus.
The spellcasting modifier is clearly documented. What proficiencies apply to spellcasting, Arcana? I feel like I'm missing a piece here.
Thanks for any help.
You're considered proficient with any spells you can cast.

Ah, OK. Now I get it! So here's what I'm seeing.
1st level Wizard (who's spellcasting ability is Intelligence)
Spellcasting attack roll: d20 + spellcasting ability modifier (i.e. Intelligence 16 = +3) + proficiency modifier (1st level = +2 for any "proficiency") = d20 + 5 to hit with a spell.
Thanks for the help.
