I am quite new to D&D and have just leveled up my Divination Wizard to Level 3 and am looking for some advice, as well as making sure that I am understanding the rules correctly. My wizard is also a Rock Gnome if that is of interest.
From my current understanding of a Level 3 Divination Wizard, my current spell setup is as follows:
Cantrips:
Mage Hand
Ray of Frost
Shocking Grasp
Spells:
Catapult (1st)
Chromatic Orb (1st)
Detect Magic (1st)
Ice Knife (1st)
Magic Missile (1st)
Mind Spike (2nd)
Misty Step (2nd)
Shield (1st)
Sleep (1st)
Thunderwave (1st)
I should have 4 Level 1 Spell Slots and 2 Level 2 Spell Slots with the ability to prepare 6 Spells if my understanding is correct.
Does anyone see any glaring mistakes or anything I am overlooking? Any advice would be appreciated, and good luck fellow adventurers!
In my opinion, Divination Wizards are the weakest ones of them. They don't get attack spells nore buffing spells... just some situational spells which allows them get some advantage in every case but, at what prize ???
I disagree, I love Divination Wizards. But you’re focusing on Evocation spells.
My advice is to pick more divination spells and rituals. You can only prepare a limited number of spells, but you can cast rituals out of combat so learn fewer evocation spells and more divination rituals that you can cast without preparing them. Role play as an investigator, a scholar, or even someone who is the ultimate snoop constantly spying. And make sure that you have one spell that requires Concentration for each spell level and use them.
Divination Wizards are among the most powerful in the game, solely because of Portent. To capitalize on your ability to hard-nerf enemies' saving throws, I'd focus on save-or-suck spells. Things like Hold Person, Charm Person, etc. At higher levels, Banishment.
It's not just portent. The 6th level ability is powerful, especially if your DM lets you create a single other Divination attack spell greater than 2nd level. Ideally without concentration so you can toss it around like candy. A solid Bonus Action spell version of True Strike (perhaps one that can be upcast to extend duration) works well.
Cantrips are good.
Catapult is a situational spell. Damage wise, it is basically less valuable than Chromatic Orb. Has issues with ammo not being available and not affecting creatures immune to non-magical damage.
It's real value is in combination with a disarm-er. A Cleric with Command spell or a a Battlemaster with Disarm maneuver, then you Catapult their weapon out of battle can effectively win the battle for you. Works well with a McGuffin as well, but that is a rare thing.
Also you are short on Ritual spells. That is a major advantage of being a Wizard. All you have is Detect Magic.
I think a good wizard wants all of these spells eventually:
Detect Magic
Identify
Comprehend Languages
Alarm
Find Familiar
Floating Disk
Skywrite
Once you learn those spells they stick around forever and I guarantee you will find a need for them. Lost/need help? Skywrite. Weird Runes/non-violent creatures? Comprehend Languages ! Too much treasure? Floating Disk

Partway through the quest for absolute truth.
