Here are my experience notes playing through the first half of SKT. Hope this helps anyone else considering a wizard in the campaign.
Good things/ suggestions
Everything is TALL. Our only melee character is a halfling barbarian. Every fireball is centered 25' in the air! 😂
Campaign needs a wizard with Teleportation Circle and Sending! It is almost a pre req with how spread out it is.
Familiar is a must. My owl has turned multiple ambushes into easy fights. Super flying scout!
Shield spell is a must! Lots of incoming missles (boulders) that hit hard!!!
Flying, dimension door, mysty step, etc. are also a must. You need to get out of melee combat or you die.
Cons / concerns
Everything hits hard. Almost everything we encounter can take me to ~5hp with one blow. Critical and two attacks per action are deadly. My owl is always looking for more trouble sneaking up ("adds") during combat and I am always taking cover way back from the fight. Spent a lot of the time spell sniping from around corners, behind rocks, etc.
Language issues. You must know giant for some spells.
Few spellbooks. There are few casters in the adventure encounters. Talk to your DM because THE biggest advantage of a wizard goes away if you never have access to more than the minimum number of spells you get free when you level.
Counterspell is limited use. Few casters encountered, and damage avoidance tactics means you are never within 30'.
Magic items are limited. As much as it hurts, the cloak of Protection went to the barbarian. He just needed it more often. And the lack of casters among encounters means I have not seen a wizard specific magic items in treasure yet.
Good luck! Please post your experiences or things I have missed!!!
