As I was sitting on the toilet scheming for my next min maxed dnd build, I noticed that the Illusion wizard has game breaking potency with it's ability, Illusory reality. Just making something out of nothingness seems quite OP.
So I had some questions regarding its ability.
1. Can someone or a group of people be in the illusion you make real? For example, could I cast silent image to make a 15x15x15 cube of ice, activate illusory reality, and trap a bunch of combatants in the ice?
2. Can the thing made by this ability be effected by other spells and abilities you, your allies, and your enemies have? For example, could I make an inanimate replica of an iron golem and then cast animate objects onto it and essentially have a nerfed Iron golem fighting alongside me and my allies?
3. Could Consumable parts of an Illusion I make real be consumed? For example, If I cast illusory terrain to make an oasis in an endless desert, could I eat/drink the plants and/or water in the oasis provided that I'm fine with potentially getting poisoned or any other status effect?
4. How would the ability work with spells such as color spray and invisibility?
5. Personal opinion: Would it be worth taking silent image as a spell mastery at level 18 to be able to have infinite uses of illusory reality, or should I just take the classic shield?
The object can’t deal damage or otherwise directly harm anyone.
Creating a cage of sorts is not dealing damage or directly harming, but to try and suffocate the enemy by encasing them in something is.
2. Yes, but remember the object only remains real for 1 minute.
3. As long as your consumables are actually inanimate (like the illusion of a banquet) then I think this is fine, but seems quite open to DM interpretation. I could see someone ruling that because the consumable is only real for a minute that food or drink would not give the nutrients required. The more powerful thing to do with this is to create expensive spell components and use them before the 1 minute timer elapses.
4. Color Spray is an instantaneous effect. The effect lasts for a round but there is nothing to manipulate with your bonus action after casting it. Invisibility does not create an illusion of an inanimate object. There is simply nothing to change. Not all illusion spells will have an effect that can be manipulated with this feature.
5. Not only is that worth it, but I say take it one step further. Pick up Eldritch Adept: Misty Visions by level 12 so that you have at-will Silent Image by the time you get to level 14. It's that good.
Well I certainly can't condone trying to make your DM miserable lol. But I'm assuming that's you sense of humor. Have fun with the illusionist if you ever do play it! Your creativity has so much to explore with this one
It might be worth it for a high-level Illusion Wizard to take Eldritch Adept (Misty Visions) for their at-will Silent Image and choose Shield for Spell Mastery.
