Current party: 8 PC Myself (cleric) Paladin Ranger Sorcerer Wizard Fighter Dealer Undecided
Initially when the party was smaller, I was going to go start off the campaign as a Tempest cleric. But now that the party has grown (all of our cousins have joined...), I'm wondering if I should change to Life domain before we begin this weekend. For parties this big (I've never played cleric before), how important is it to have someone that does have that extra healing support?
Of the current party the cleric, paladin and ranger have access to some form of healing for others. Fighter will have second wind.
Would a Tempest cleric be enough, or would you think the extra healing bonuses from Life domain be more worthwhile for a party of this size? If I would go Life domain, then I would also likely multi-class with druid to pick up goodberry and healing spirit.
Thanks for your thoughts! This forum has been so helpful :)
I played a tempest cleric in a 6 person party, and it worked really well, and it was super fun to have the offensive options that subclass gives you. Plus you’ve got the paladin and ranger to help you with the healing, (if only to get you up if you drop) and some of the others ( I’m guessing dealer is an autocorrect, but I can’t figure what it would have been) depending on which subclass they go for. I stayed straight cleric and we finished at level 14, I had no problems keeping everyone alive. Well one guy died, but by then I was able to raise him.
The paladin and ranger can heal too, starting at level 2.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

Given that Paladins, rangers, and sorcerers are usually based off dealing damage and not so much other things like healing or utility...
given that the fighter is only there to take hits and deal damage....
the undecided person, yourself, and the wizard (I didn’t read the dealer thing so can’t say for that yet.) are the only ones there not in a basically strictly deal damage capacity.
under that light, leaves you with couple of choices:
utility cleric- (knowledge or something like that)
pure healer: (life, grave, etc.)
or be ANOTHER damage dealer type: (tempest, war, forge) and keep the party alive more so by killing things quicker.
not knowing backgrounds, skill proficiency, and etc. but just going based off what you “typically” see for X classes and such for those....
that 8 person group has quite a few holes regarding non-combat things that may come up. I clicked on the dealer link and it doesn’t give anything just now btw.
but, the wizard right now might be the only you have who is investigative. Yourself and the ranger are the only ones who seem to have good/high wisdom for insight. However since neither of you are likely to be faced with the charisma classes. You might not get chances to share that insight. Less so if players RP their INT scores.
Ultimately... play what you find fun. Is always the best approach. If you don’t want to heal don’t be a cleric.
theres plenty of ways in 5e to heal. Short rests and hit die. Buying potions rather than gold hoarding. Being kore tactical in combat vs charge in, take hits, and “kill or be killed” straightforward mentality.
but I prob wouldn’t go tempest given the composition personally.
Life works well, and Grave is another good option. Life heals better at lower spell slot levels (at least with healing word) whereas the max rolls on 0 HP players works better at higher spell slots (I think that a Level 3 spell slot was the turning point, but it could have been Level 4) but that doesn't take Blessed Healer into consideration. IIRC, Grave automatically gets Spare the Dying and can cast it as a bonus action at 30 ft. That's a nice fallback for low to zero spell slot terrain. Toll the Dead works quite well, especially with Grave's Potent spellcasting adding your Wisdom Modifier after Cleric 8.
Basically, Life is the melee healer and Grave is the ranged healer, though, that's not a hard and fast rule.
So far you have one off healer (Paladin) a possible off healer (ranger). a possible full healer (Sorcerer if they go divine soul)
I'm going to file your Fighter as DPR or Tank, and your Wizard as Utility until later levels where it might become DPR.
Dealer seemed complicated so I'm not even going to surmise.
Depending on your Sorcerer's Subclass, and what your undecided does, yeah, you should be fine to take Tempest if that's what you like. Just grab a couple of healing spells and you're another off healer. Your party has a good bit of healing, and make sure they know you are NOT their personal heal bot. now what would be awesome is if you could convince your undecided person to also go cleric, possibly another worshiper of your god, who praises their restoritve powers making them a life cleric. I loved playing a life cleric, using support spells to keep my party happy and debuff our enemies.
Fun fact: Blindness/Deafness is not a concentration spell. If you can slap blindness on a spell caster, you nullify most of his casting ability. Oh, and spiritual weapon isn't concentration either. So a life cleric can still dish out some damage

Lol it wasn't auto correct, one player is a Dealer, using magic tarot cards:

But thanks for your input, I like tempest for it's blasting potential for sure, seems really fun.
Just want to make sure there's enough healing to go around for 8 players with limited spell slots.
The druid spirit totem unicorn is pretty cool, every healing spell also adds healing to every player in range equal to the druid level.
The paladin and ranger can heal too, starting at level 2.
