I'm struggling to make my RP character work in combat, but I have ... faith.
The plan, right now, is to the take 6 levels of Order Cleric to take advantage of the 1st level spell and up buff machine, then take at least 6 of Eloquence Bard for the thematics of being an orator cleric or maybe some Lore Bard. The problem is, Order Cleric has the advantage of being in heavy armor and I feel like should take advantage of that. I know a popular build is Divine soul sorc, but that just seems to not fit the bill for my character. Is there a better subclass for the bard that could still fit the orator-type character I'm looking for, or could I go a different direction with multiclass ( not really looking to go straight cleric as the order cleric kinda loses any solid abilities past level 6)?
I think Order Cleric/Eloquence Bard can work. Remember that Order's Channel Divinity can combo with the Eloquence Bard's Unsettling Words feature. Got a swarm of enemies with one big guy, and they're all gonna swing on their next turn? Unsettling Words on the big guy, and Order the lot of them in range to drop their weapons. You have just effectively neutralized one round of combat in a single turn.
The Order Cleric might have access to heavy armor, but not necessarily martial weapons. There's two ways to get around that. Quick way is to be a Hill Dwarf but to have at least a 13 charisma and wisdom for the multiclass requirements. Then you'll have access to a warhammer to start as the Cleric as well as other useful benefits. No delays on your ASIs. The longer way around is to start as a Bard at 1st level, then immediately multiclass into Order Cleric at 2nd level. You'll gain proficiency with rapiers and longswords, and then gain your extra armor and Persuasion. First ASI will be delayed to around level 5 at the earliest in that build, and you'll start a little more MAD than you want just to survive to level 2.
