Hiya'll. AL just gave us all a respec and opened up all the books. I had a cleric from s7 that i'd like to respec to a Mercy Monk. He has the goat staff of striking. I'm having a hard time deciding what race to choose. I think halfling would be supper adorbs. Same with gnome. I'm avoiding mt dwarf as i already have a level 20 dwarf monk.
So what are your suggested races and why? For me. Cool concepts are more important than mechanical advantages.
Im playing a Dwarf Mercy Monk right now. The main reason I chose this race was so I could pick up the Dwarven Fortitude feat. This feat (along with patient defense) means I have a self-heal as an action (or bonus action) that I do not necessarily have to spend ki on. So I can heal myself with Hands of Healing or I can use Dwarven Fortitude to save those heals for other party members. In a pinch I can spend 2 ki points, 1 for Hand of Healing and 1 to Patient Defense/Dwarven Fortitdue, so I get to Dodge and I get back Martial Arts Die + Wis + Hit Die + Con that turn.
Not sure what all is allowed for AL though.
Edit: I just ran the numbers on my monk, and using this 2ki combo move (at 4th level) I could get back anywhere between 7 and 17 HP with my scores (Wis 14, Con 16). For comparison, Quickened Healing is an action and also costs 2 ki and would return a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 7 HP.

Well... Unless future documentation says otherwise, Aarakocra and winged tiefling are on the table.
Aarakocra mercy monk flying around the battlefield saving lives and delivering merciful death like a valkyrie sounds pretty awesome.
Besides that, hard to argue against tabaxi monk.
Aasimar has a bit of extra healing when needed and fits a valkyrie/guardian angel/angel of death theme.
Just going through and picking highlights from the list now:
Those are the ones that stand out to me.
Bugbear. Just picture those long fluffy, flailing limbs, able to reach out either to punch, or to tenderly heal.
