I have the hankerings for an AD&D game but I know nobody irl. I mean, WOTC owns the game, so why can't they just extend the license for earlier versions as well? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be down for this...
I'm not asking for features, just for the ability to play these games on the PbP forums.
The tools for this site were coded for 5e. It would take a massive amount of work to implement versions for different editions with little likelihood of getting any return on that investment. There's digital character sheets out there for earlier versions, many with auto-calculation properties. All core books of previous editions are available as PDF downloads by WotC on DMs Guild and for little cost, usually.
At this point in time it's a mega-shit-ton of work, for virtually nothing.
If you don't need any of that and just want a place to post PBP games, then use the PBP forum. There's no rule saying the games there must be 5th Edition. Heck, there's also the off-topic Adohand's Kitchen forum where you can set up PBP for any game that isn't D&D, if you want.

You could do it but would have to customize nearly everything. The majority of rules are already coded into each class and race so you'd have to make homebrew every class and race. You'd have to homebrew tens or hundreds of spells. Every creature is 5e version so those would need a custom paint job as well.
It would be an astounding amount of work for little gain I think. As Cyb3rM1nd said, you can find other resources to use that would be easier than using DDB.

While Cyber and Wysp I think helped answer the "why" D&D Beyond doesn't support every iteration of the game, I really don't understand what you're asking whey you say "I'm not asking for features, just for the ability to play these games on the PbP forums." What's stopping you from doing that, I mean the dice roller is the same no matter what in the forums, so nothing's really stopping you from you doing you on this front, as Cyber pointed out (and frankly I don't think the PbP forum is policed to keep other rule systems out). If you want to use D&D Beyond character sheets for another edition, that's asking for features.
True, nothing is stoping you from using the easily accessible forums and dice roller. You could use it to play anything (Champions or Shadowrun or whatever) just know the built in PC tools need to be found elsewhere.

Everything here is 5th edition, right? D&D Beyond is a 5th edition toolset, so mostly everything on these forums will center around 5th edition. There may be a few exceptions in the PbP forums, but for the most part, 5th edition is what you'll find.
Because D&D Beyond supports 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons, that's what we allow in our play by post forums
Just get the ruleset which is available on multiple platforms and get a group to come over. My 17yr old is about to run Keep of the Borderlands as a table top game. It is important to remember where all of this stated so I highly encourage players to play some of these wonderful modules....easy to obtain also.
