Small suggestion, but you should be able to zoom and pan on your image for your avatar.
I support that. I have borders showing and 0 Photoshop skills...
Utter, total noob. Easily dicetimadated...
But... I like laughing at everyone's black borders.

Until such an option becomes available, try this:
Using any image editing software of your choice, crop a square portion of the image you want to be your avatar.
If that doesn't fix it, check the size of your image - mine is 197 pixels, square, and seems not to have any problems.
I noticed when I originally uploaded my avatar it was way too small, when I hit "delete" it instead auto fit and didnt actually delete lol
