So I stand here looking at the PHB and wondering if it's worth buying, or waiting for the revised version due to land November, which apparently has some significant changes to character creation.
If I spend the full retail price now on DDB for the digital version, will I get the updates in a few months? Or will my content drop to legacy status?

I forget if they've officially said so, but don't expect the PH to be updated.
If they were to do that, they'd break all the existing campaigns playing with the old books.
They are indeed two different books; the 2014 Player's Handbook will not receive updates to become the 2024 book.
I do not know if any of the 2014 core rulebooks will get the Legacy tag, though.
