As DM, I have created some NPC characters as regular character sheets in the Campaign Collection screen. Occasionally I'll have one of the players run one of these characters in especially busy combat encounters. I noticed the ability to unassign a character that I as DM had created which allowed a Player to join the campaign again and claim the NPC character to run it for the session. Unfortunately, I then discovered there did not seem to be a way for me as DM to unassign that character once claimed by a player to be claimed by someone else if necessary. Am I missing the option? Does the player currently assigned have the ability to unassign but not the DM? Or am I just stuck constantly creating new duplicate copies of a character in the campaign so that another player can claim, cluttering up the campaign collection with a bunch of old character sheets I have to manually delete (which is a recipe for missing things when duplicating, and potentially losing things when deleting old sheets)?
There isn't a way to do this, I believe because DDB doesn't want to have to deal with complaints (both legitimate and not) of 'my DM is a bad person who stole my character sheet!' So you can only unassign characters currently assigned to you. If you're having issues getting players to unassign a character from themselves when they're done, possibly consider only giving them a PDF of the character sheet. Or rename the duplicates before giving them out, from 'Dave Starankle' to 'Dave Starankle DELETE 050825.'
