Something I often do is look at the map and the n read through a room, then look back at the map. But this can get very cumbersome in things like Tomb of Annihilation for example. It would extremely handy if there was a slide out tray in the margins where I could select an image to view. The images shown would be relevant to the Chapter/Section you are reading in.

I like this idea. The closest we have is the Chrome extension called Beyond Help that adds tooltips to the map itself, but even that isn't the best for when you have to keep going back and forth.
