If I take expertise in Thieves Tools to double my proficiency bonus, that appears nowhere on the sheet. Expertise in thieves tools is buried and in Tools on the front page no modifier appears. It should.
I feel the same. It doesn't need to have a modifier (since tools are not usually limited to a specific ability), but some indication of proficiency vs expertise qould be appreciated.
I've read that argument before but have some issues with it. For thief tools it is almost always going to be dex. Skills can be mixed and matched too according to the rules. For example Strength Intimidation. Sheet should make it obvious what your pick locks and disarm traps skill is. There must be some sensible compromise.
Having to go into Skills and each tool manually as a custom skill is a major annoyance; especially for someone like an Artificer who might have7 or more tools. I agree with the OP, I'd like to see Tools displayed more prominently.

Watch your back, conserve your ammo, and NEVER cut a deal with a dragon!
I understand the purpose, BUT the Artificer is still only UA and not official, which means I doubt the DnD crew takes too much consideration into the Artificer into the interface (unless they're being told behind the scenes that an artificer will be coming to an official sourcebook).
At the moment, I think a character can only have a few tools with expertise at the same time (multi-classing included), so the current format works for official options, since it's easier for those characters to add a proficiency to the skill list, as opposed to showing all tools to all characters, some of which would never use them. I'd rather not see my fighter's page be filled with the tool options when it's unnecessary.
It will be going official (The Wayfarer's Guide to Eberron). At this time it looks like 1 more interation. I am unsure if that will be on UA or in the actual release to WGtE.
Either way, The displayign of Tools should still be looked into IMO.

What I'm saying is until it becomes official, I doubt anything will be changed on the artificer's behalf. The displaying of tools is a minor issue in comparison to the overall character classes.
Thanks for the tip. I added Thieves Tools to the skills column. I still think it should be "skills and tools" and add thieves tools automatically but at least the sheet is much more clear now!

You can add a skill to your skills, i.e. Thieves tools and give yourself expertise on it. It even still flows in alphabetical order.
