seems like a long ignored oversight, but how about custom weapons and other gear, for example my GM added a pistol that does 2d4 damage, something that is not part of any equipment in dndbeyond, so just creating a copy and renaming is not an option. and no custom attack does not work either, if the GM then adds a +1 version of the weapon, there is no way to add a +1 magical bonus to a custom attack
+1 to the request for a more robust toolset that gives us more options when making weapons and gear.
As for Ghaleonausa's example: Start with a Double-Bladed Scimitar as this is the only official weapon that uses 2d4 as it's damage dice. Customize it to change the damage type to that weapon's damage type. Include in the description all of the details of the new weapon and to ignore everything else. Check Everything you need to know about creating homebrew weapons for hints on how to do some things.
