For the beta, only the rules and options provided in the D&D 5th edition SRD , D&D 5th edition Basic Rules, Elemental Evil Companion are available in Beyond. Once the full platform launches later this summer, the core rule books and others will be available for purchase, and the content within will be available for those that purchase, or have access through a DM's subscription
Will there be any credit given for those who already purchased the physical books? Or will they be charged again for the same content?
The discount is paying 20 dollars for the three core rule books in the first week. Then 30 after that, all of the books so far listed below retail already.

Thanks :) Where can I see this information? When is the first week?

OK, I see, thanks! Man a lot of pages of comments and questions.
So if I understand correctly, to actually use the tool at all in any meaningful way, a player will at least have to buy the PHB (for $20 or $30), right?
Will there be any "content" in the free tool if you don't 'unlock' any of the rulebooks?
I can't tell from the announcement what you get as a player if you don't subscribe. Limited character slots and ads on the site? I could certainly live with that, unless the character limit is one or the ads pop up in modal windows on my tablet in the middle of the game.

A subscription is not mandatory. The Hero Tier gives you unlimited slots for character creation, ads removal, and access to use homebrew stuff from the community.
For a free subscription the character slots are six, as they are now.

The free tool will have what is currently in the tool now that you have access to. If you want extras then yes either the 20 or 30 for the PHB or you can go piecemeal buying what you want.
Ahh, so the free tool will continue to have the D&D 5th edition SRD , D&D 5th edition Basic Rules, Elemental Evil Companion ? That's nice then - I could hopefully then just unlock one or two classes and use it for my war cleric and, say, a mage of some sort - getting access to all their spells and traits and everything I need to play using the website on my tablet?
I can only pick life domain which is so boring! Really looking to get that war domain going so I can play that.

Yes, everything that is free now will always be free.
