In a recent Dev Update, Joe Starr was talking about Dragon's Wrath weapons not being worked on because they would have to individually code thousands of weapons. That got me thinking. Instead of creating a Dragon's Wrath version of each weapon, wouldn't it be easier to code it as an option available in the "Customize" section for weapons?
Similar to Silvered weapons, have a tick box for Dragon's Wrath, which would then open a drop down option box to select the Item State. Once you select that, it applies the appropriate abilities from the Item State to the weapon and character sheet. This way, each Item state only has to be coded once, but can be applied to literally any weapon.
I don't know about "becoming" a DW weapon, but the text states the a DW weapon can be "Any Weapon". So anything that is considered a PC weapon can be used as a DW hoard item. I doubt you cold take an existing magical weapon and turn it into a DW, but that's entirely up to the DM.
Did the; "...because they would have to individually code thousands of weapons.", mean that every single item could become a Dragon's Wrath Weapon?
No what it means is that they would have to create this many individual items for a player to add to their sheet just in case:
It can be any weapon so we are up to 37 items already (excluding firearms, boomerangs, and yklwas).
It has four stages (slumbering, stirring, wakened, ascendant), so multiply this by 4.
It has properties regarding damage types depending on the type of dragon (acid, cold, fire, force, lightning, necrotic, poison, psychic, radiant, thunder), so multiply this by 10. It would in fact be more appropriate to give it a property depending on the dragon, not the damage type, so this number should be 15 instead (the 5 chromatic types, the 5 gem types, and the 5 metallic types).
Minimum total number of magic items unless I missed something: 37 × 4 × 15 = 2220 (or 1480 if we just use damage type and not dragon type).
This is, I think, more than the number of (official) magic items already on the site. For just one item.
Now let's include firearms, boomerangs, and the yklwa. The number of weapons goes up by 12 from 37 to 49, so the number of items is 49 × 4 × 15 = 2940.

Yup, you got it.
Simply put, we need a better way of being able to build magic items that can have options.
We have plans on how to do that, and I am really looking forward to us being able to fully build all of those weird edge-case magic items we've had problems with up until now.

That's great. When these tools become available to you, try not to forget the little guy - the dungeon masters who like to homebrew and want to be able to make cool stuff for their players too.

Exactly why I suggested it as a "Customize" option. I did completely forget the damage type, too. I'm not a coder and could be completely off base, but I think that would limit the coding needed to this:
Is it a DW Weapon? If yes, then: Select Damage Type. Apply Dmg Type to Weapon Select Item State. Apply Abilites to Character Sheet
I know this is an extremely simplified flow chart, but it's just a suggestion versus coding thousands of individual weapons.

Yes, please, this would be great.
