I realize that this is mostly a licensing issue with WotC rather than something you have full control over, but it's still annoying that you can't just buy content once and use it everywhere. Ideally, I'd be able to buy the hardcover book, send WotC a copy of the receipt after the return period, and have access to the content on D&D Beyond, Fantasy Grounds, or anywhere else with licensed content. I know there are ways people could game the system to get free digital content without actually buying the book, but there are ways to pirate the content now, so I don't think they'd lose any money, and would get enough goodwill to likely increase revenue. I know I would buy more if I had full access to it. I'd even be fine with a nominal fee (say $5) to unlock it on digital platforms after buying the book, but full price is ridiculous.
Of course, that's WotCs decision and there's nothing you can do about it. You could theoretically (depending on the details of your contract) work out a deal with Fantasy Grounds or other providers to allow content purchased on one platform to be unlocked on others. Authorization of digital content is harder to fake without hacking your system, and would be technically feasible to link accounts so that it was unlocked in both places. I know it's unlikely to happen, but here's hoping.
When you buy a book in a store do you think the store takes some of the money and sends it to Hasbro with a little note saying “here is your cut”?
The money you give a FLGS, D&D B, or anyone else goes to that retailer alone. The retailer then uses that money to BUY more books/license from WotC. So saying that you want something that you already bought across all platforms would require a increase in price due to needing to pay all possible platforms a nominal amount per book per person. Don’t like having to buy content twice? How would you feel about the PHB being $300?
