It will be made to work for campaigns once we get into the phase of adding more campaign management tools. Currently there's no easy way to hide it out of the editor, as the same editor is used across the site.
So, it's been about 3.5 years since I posted this but it's still really relevant.
Well, I understand that now we have "dice" and the text based roller is probably not the future. And we have a game log which is great because it tracks the history of rolls in a campaign.
Ability to roll for self or everyone is nice too.
And combat tracker lets me roll as a monster and saves it in the history which is also nice.
But most of my rolls are against tables or for NPCs or something else non-combat related. There's consistently been no way I can track these for campaigns I want to run in dndbeyond.
Recently, due to some unrelated circumstance, I realized I could just add a player-character that represents me-as-the-DM to a campaign and then roll generic d20 rolls for either myself or everyone and they will be tracked in the game log. but that has a whole bunch of other issues which are annoying.
Is there something I'm missing that lets me roll generically into the game log? Or can this issue be addressed soon?
Rather than using the campaign-wide notes section, I like to keep track of notes in the encounter builder (even if it's not a combat encounter) . This has a few advantages, none of which actually requires using the combat tracker with initiative/rounds.
You get on-the-fly dice rolling that ends up in the game log using the on-screen dice.
You can edit/save notes and they are visible in the context of a group of NPCs/creatures. There are three sections for notes, which is nice.
You can see an NPC's stats with one-click (and roll for them!)
Using the "Copy" button you can clone your entire encounter and have another similar one ready to go.
Of course, if you end up needing to actually start combat, that's only a click away at that point ("Run Encounter").
Even if you don't want to set up an encounter with a specific group of NPCs or creatures, you could have one for a generic area (e.g. the town of Phandalin) with relevant notes and have any ad-hoc rolls end up in the game log.
because i'd like to roll in my private notes section so that i can keep checks secret but also keep a history of rolls.
if it's not supposed to work then maybe the dice roller button should not be in the campaign notes menu ...

I am the Inquisitor Imperitus. I am judge, jury, and executioner. Draw your last breath now, as I send you to the Nine Hells.
Why not just make it work now? What would be wrong with that?

Anything?
